The 18 Month ChallengeIn 2020 I turn 35. I decided that as a treat for myself I would go to the fighting game tournament EVO. I hadn't long gotten back into fighting games but I wanted to experience the atmosphere of a big tournament, not as a combatent but simply as a spectoator. The trouble is, EVO takes place in Las Vegas... Going to Vegas would cost £1000 or more even when booked well in advance.
I set my heart on going. Months later I check the EVO fund and found that it was empty. Not only was the EVO pot empty but my finances had gone backwards.
With the EVO pot empty and finding that there was no way I could possibly make up the cash, I started to evaluate all of the time that I had been burning. In 2018 I had challenged myself to Live Stream on Twitch.TV every day for a year. It was going to be the first time I had played games regularly in over a decade.
I already daily vlogged on YouTube so I figured it would be easy. Easy, yes... but it was one hell of a time sink.
I've been sharing life on the internet for decades, blogging, vlogging, podcasting and livestreaming regularly. I've run small businesses online and off for many years.
I figured now would be as good a time as any to start cutting things out. Things that didn't really hold water anymore. The trouble is, I'm addicted to doing most of what I do. I've been doing these things for so long that they have become part of my routine. They earn little to no money... but its kind of what I do.
I've never gone all out with any of these things before outside of a few runs of self employment. It has been decided that 2019 would be the start of the 18 month challenge. 18 months to take these things seriously (or at least more so than we ever had before) and attempt to make up roughly the value of the ticket to EVO, $1000 (we've changed to USD due to most folks who may support being from the states and asking for them to pay out in GBP would be cheeky.) If we fail, even if its very close, I have to disconnect from all of my online addictions, cold turkey.
For the first time ever I wish to ask for peoples support, share a link, throw us your Twitch Prime subscription, whatever it may be. I've not once asked for donations in all of my years online... so 2019 - 2020 will be my sellout challenge.
I plan to post monthly updates to this page, giving a details breakdown of where funds are coming from.
